Self Discipline

Rules and regulations, I hate then, I tend to break them, often and all the time.  Man tends to make up way too many rules and laws anyhow.  Best is to find out a set of rules that you believe in, better yet is to set up a set of principles you believe in, and live by that code, religiously. Rules vs Principles.

That done one now needs to have the discipline to live by that code.

“Discipline. If you do not assert it from within, you will pay for it.”

The Mexican Horse Thief

Self Discipline is what it is called and is defined thus; the ability to control one’s feelings and overcome one’s weaknesses; the ability to pursue what one thinks is right despite temptations to abandon it.

Of all the important qualities that can contribute to a person’s achievements and happiness, but there is only one that brings sustainable, long-term success in all aspects of life: self discipline. There are many benefits from becoming self disciplined.  One of the little men in white jackets, Wilhelm Hoffman, made a study of this and reported.

“People with high self control are happier than those without. The study discovered this is true because the self disciplined subjects were more capable of dealing with goal conflicts. These people spent less time debating whether to indulge in behaviours detrimental to their health, and were able to make positive decisions more easily. The self disciplined did not allow their choices to be dictated by impulses or feelings. Instead, they made informed, rational decisions on a daily basis without feeling overly stressed or upset. “

Very few, very, very few people seem to be born with this trait, so most would have to work on developing it if they wish to improve their life and personality. As we have seen, the unwashed masses tend not to like to work on themselves, not at all. Funny thing is 100% talk about how they want to/are going to though.  The main reason for this lack of action on good intentions is; no self discipline.

If you are one of the unlucky ones that was not born with this trait, good news! Self discipline can fall under learned behaviour.  Firstly get this in your head, “If nothing changes, nothing changes.”

Improving your self discipline means changing up your normal routine, this can be uncomfortable and awkward. Be brave and do it anyhow.  Get up on time in the morning, every day, is the best start.  (If you do not do that already.)Get rid of the temptations in your immediate environment, like, chuck out all the booze or snack food.  Schedule breaks, and rewards for yourself. Self discipline does not mean your new regimen needs to be entirely cold turkey, hard core, or drill sergeant-like in execution.  Take a day off a day a week and spoil yourself a bit, not too bloody much, hey!  Instituting a new way of thinking won’t always go according to plan. You will have ups and downs, fabulous successes, and flat out failures. The key is to keep moving forward. When you have a setback, acknowledge what caused it and move on.  Never give up.

As with any self improvement, you cannot do this for anyone else and no one can do it for you. So before you ever try, make sure that you want it, really, really WANT it, or don’t even bother.

Simple, but not easy.
