Not as simple as it sounds, to be an honest person. Been completely honest entails a hell of a lot more than just not lying or stealing. The first thing one ought to do is be honest with oneself; for, as it has been asked, how can I be honest with others if I am not honest with myself.  Never mind the others for now, by been dishonest with yourself causes many, many problems. The trend lately is for people to claim all sorts of ailments to explain, or is it to excuse their bad behavior?  I put it to you that more people talk themselves into these disorders than actually suffer from them. Those that do actually have a real problem, take heart, self honesty will not cure the disorder, but if you work on it, put the disorder in remission.

Self honesty takes self discipline and discipline has to be worked at, external discipline is usually enforced by laws and policemen. Only you can enforce self discipline and here many will use some disorder to claim they cannot do this. If you are serious about honesty here you will have do a self appraisal, honestly, but do not forget to put your good in with the bad! Many people are “dis-honest” and or show a false modesty about their good points, this is as bad for you as lying about your bad points.

Once you have that right, you are ready to be honest with others, which again can become complicated if you are not honest in your motivation. You hear people excuse bad behavior and hurtful actions by claiming to be honest. Brutally honest. Brutal honesty is just that, brutal. If you did find in your honest appraisal, on your good points that you have claimed to be a kind person, fucking go look again, honestly! Some things are best left unsaid, and again if you are honest with yourself, you will know which these are, and what your motivation to say something that will hurt another person. Brutal honesty by a man that should have known better killed my friend, he was told by the man that was supposed to be his sponsor/teacher/mentor, when he said he feels suicidal, “ If you kill yourself I will piss on your grave.” My friend shot himself through the head a few days later.

Honesty does not mean that you tell the whole world EVERYTHING. That said, you may wonder why/how I came to these conclusions. In all honesty, ha ha, I can lay claim to at least a few disorders, like PTSD, ADD, ADHD, Alcoholism and a few others, but if I am honest I have to say that it just the bloody alcohol that got me.

But I am working on that.
